Utilising a Unique Motif in Ikebana

Two Design Directions: Natural vs. Stylised

Goal : Allium schubertii, with its stunning starburst shape, offers a bold yet delicate presence in ikebana. Known for its long, radiating blooms, this allium variety creates a dynamic and energetic visual effect. Its unique form invites the viewer into a world where nature’s patterns take on both organic and architectural qualities, making it an exciting feature flower in ikebana.

Two Style Directions: Natural vs. Stylized/Architectural

When designing with Allium schubertii, you can choose between two different stylistic directions, each emphasising the flower’s unique motif in its own way.

  1. Natural Style

In a natural style arrangement, the focus is on celebrating the organic qualities of the allium. You can present flowers in their natural way, allowing the starburst shape of the Allium to shine without alteration, highlighting its connection to the earth and nature’s inherent beauty, giving the creation an organic and natural impression.

  2. Stylised Style

For a more stylised approach, you can emphasise the geometric qualities of Allium. The round, linear, and star-shaped elements of the flower become focal points, creating a structural design. By manipulating space and placement, this style brings a less organic, contemporary feel to the arrangement, transforming the allium into a work of art that feels almost engineered.

Flowers used : Allium schubertii, Hosta, Grape stunk

Allium schubertii is native to regions such as Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. This ornamental plant stands out with its unusual growth pattern. Despite its large, showy bloom and thick stem, the flower remains low to the ground, creating an interesting visual contrast.
